You leave the comforts of your cabin in the dark woods in search of glory and wealth. At a local inn you hear a rumor of the wizards library. It is said that there is treasure there for the taking! If...you can get past the creatures that guard it.
HA! You survived! Good for you. In the headmaster's chamber of the wizards library you rummage through the desk and discover a note. The note reads: 'I no longer can wield this power. Soon enough the Dark Lord will take back that what was given...Damn it all! I should have known not to meddle in powers beyond me'--Headmaster Lorgrim III. on the back of the note you see a map. the title reads 'Maze of Governance'. Call me a fool, but I think its worth a look.
As you travel the maze you begin to miss your home. How long has it been? days? weeks? The fog of the maze blurred the lines of reality; and in turn, time itself. as you get to the center of the maze the fog starts to lift, you gain your bearings and notice a shimmering light. You follow it to a room filled to the brim with treasure. Shocked and excited you go to scoop some loot! As your hand grasps the coins the piles of gold suddenly turn to bones. A beast bursts out of the pile and you prepare for combat!
The creature is Slain! Gasping for air you hear a voice: "You fool, to
meddle in the arts of which you do not understand..". Confused (mainly because you just
wanted some treasure and not power) the voice continues:
"I was once an Adventurer like
you...until I took an arrow to the knee...(cough)..you must continue through the Thorns of
Curation..then to the mountain...be wary....The dark...Lor...".
----------------
The
voice fades. You reach for the note you previously found in the Wizard's Library to find it
missing. Perhaps it was the voice of the headmaster?...No...no cant be. Besides, ghosts
are'nt real...right?
You camped at the forest edge. Sleep did not come to you that night.
Looking beyond the fire into the black abyss of the woods a gripping fear reaches you. Not a
sound is made, nor a glimmer of light. In fact peering into the darkness it seems to be
endless. A dark void with no end, a black abyss pulling you inward. You clutch the ground as
if at any moment it would swallow you whole...
---------------
You recall this feeling
as you venture inwards. The sun is high, yet no light makes it to this cursed forest
floor...you feel eyes on you...you sense the bloodlust in the air...you pause...the hair
stands on the back of your neck..silence...then...
(snap)
You deal the final blow to the creature and slump down in the darkness. you
wipe the blood from your blade when a chill runs down your spine. Around you you feel the
presence of many beings..human?..no...beast?...cant be...You reach down to the corpse of the
enemy you have just slain and surgically remove the head. You let out a bestial roar and
hurl the head into the darkness. Immediately the scampering of many creatures fade off into
the distance.
--------------
As you exit the forest on the north side you make a note
in your journal stating: "sometimes, you gotta bluff"
You are cautious as you approach the mountain entrance. Gothic style
architecture decorated with the stone heads of beasts loom over you as you pass through the
main doors. The main entrance is vast with the ceiling reaching what seems to be the top of
the mountain. You wonder if this is a mountain at all; or a fortress covered in rock. You
proceed forward through the dimly lit main hall and into a chamber. The chamber is dark but
you can make out faint outlines of furniture and objects in the distance. Bright red eyes
light up in the back of the room. As soon as its eyes lock with yours your soul feels heavy,
like mountain itself is resting on your shoulders. You feel the immense aura of power mixed
with suffering. You hear echos of voices and screams ringing in your brain.
After what
feels like an eternity it
spoke
------------------------------------------------
"There is nowhere to hide. Your
time has come" -- Lord Vecna
As you deliver the final blow to Lord Vecna you let out a mighty cry! Vecna
collapses onto the ground, motionless. Panting you slowly move towards the corpse. The
corpse jolts for a few seconds before levitating into the air slumped over like a rag doll.
you hear a whisper "What is given today can be taken tomorrow.....". Vecna's body starts to
smolder as if being ignited by some outside force. Black flames erupt from his clothes until
all that is left is a floating black ball of fire. The flame dies out after a few minutes
and all that remains is a gold medallion with a black stone in the center. After some
careful consideration you pick it up (obviously its loot) and put it around your neck.
Energy surges through you and your mind is injected with a flood of knowledge and power! You
are now the most powerful being on the planet...
but for how long?
